The Department of Computer Science offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science. Both degree programs provide students with advanced training in the fundamental principles and processes of computation. A bioinformatics concentration is available for each degree.

Computer Science faculty are actively engaged in a wide variety of research endeavors. Research efforts are concentrated in artificial intelligence and neural nets, bioinformatics, databases, digital image and signal processing, graphics and visualization, networks, parallel and distributed computing, programming languages, simulation and modeling, and software engineering.

Ph.D. Program

A baccalaureate or master's degree in computer science, or its equivalent, is required for admission to the Ph.D. program. The department encourages applications from high-tech and teaching professionals and those with non-computer science but closely related degrees. Pursuing the Ph.D. program part-time is possible, so working professionals are encouraged to consider applying. Competitive financial aid is available for full-time Ph.D. students along with tuition waivers.

Applying for Graduate Study

The Department of Computer Science accepts applications for the Ph.D. program only for the Fall semester with a deadline of March 15. Applications for the M.S. program are accepted each semester with a deadline of April 15 for Fall semester, October 15 for Spring, and April 1 for Summer. To apply, visit the Graduate Admissions web site for the College of Arts and Sciences. Due to the expense involved, application materials will not be sent by mail.

Financial Aid

Numerous Ph.D. fellowships as well as laboratory, research, and teaching assistantships are available to graduate students. To be considered for graduate assistantships, applicants must submit all application materials by February 15 for Fall semester and by August 15 for Spring semester. No financial aid is offered to new applicants for Summer semester.
