Dr. Song’s research interest is in computer networks and distributed computing. In recent years, Dr. Song has been focused on Sensorweb systems for environment monitoring, smart environments, and smart grid applications, where real-time sensing, computing, communication, and control play a critical role and need a transformative study. Sensorweb is also called the “Internet of Things” or the “Web of Sensors” (or “Sensor Networks”). It is one of the top ten emerging technologies in the 21st century that will change the world (according to the MIT Technology Review). If the Internet is viewed as a circulatory system connecting the world, then Sensorweb can be said to be the nervous system sensing the world: extracting timely information for efficient decision support and quick corrective actions. Those technologies will directly contribute to the sustainability of our society by improving environmental safety, healthcare effectiveness, and energy efficiency.
Dr. Song established the Sensorweb Research Laboratory in 2005 with the vision of transforming information acquisition and ambient intelligence paradigms. His research on Sensorweb systems has received more than $6 million in research funding from NSF, NASA, USGS, and Boeing since 2005. His work has also attracted much media attention, including mentions in the MIT Technology Review, Network World, Scientific American, New Scientist, National Geographic, etc. In 2010, Dr. Song received an NSF CAREER Award as well as the Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence from Washington State University Vancouver.
